Gerrard reveals why he told Coutinho to "stay away" from him

Gerrard reveals why he told Coutinho to

Michael Edwards, Liverpool's sporting director, wrote in an email to Oscar Grau, chairman of Barcelona's management board: "Unfortunately, Philippe cannot be sold at any price and, as you know, has recently extended his contract with us".

Ultimately, stubborn Liverpool managed to keep hold of their star Brazilian, but Barca are expected to go back in for him next summer.

The astronomical earnings promised to the player would have placed him within the elite bracket at the club, between former Liverpool team-mate Luis Suarez and the Spanish stalwarts of the team including Gerard Pique and Andres Iniesta.

German media outlet Der Spiegel have published details of the correspondence between the two clubs, in which Barca's first and second offers - the latter worth €90 plus €40m in add-ons - are noted. Liverpool rejected the bid and were clear that Coutinho was "not for sale at any price".

A further reply from Liverpool chief Edwards stated: 'I would kindly ask you to refrain from showing Philippe both privately and publicly.no sum will lead us to reverse our decision'. "No amount of money will change our minds".

In addition to their offer to Liverpool, the proposal made by Barcelona to Coutinho himself has also been revealed, with the Camp Nou outfit having drafted a 20-page contract of employment for the South American.

Coutinho's agent would have received an extra €10 million if a deal worth more than €100 million for his client was pushed through.

Coutinho made his first Premier League start for the Reds following the summer's drama in last weekend's 1-1 draw with Burnley and was then involved in the midweek Carabao Cup exit to Leicester City.
