Investigators reviewing HHS chief's private charter flights”

An inspector general will investigate Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Tom Price for his use of private charter jets instead of commercial aircraft.

Price's office this week sought to justify his use of chartered jets, saying the secretary's office evaluates the most effective way for him to travel and finds that it is sometimes necessary to charter planes to allow Price to both manage one of the largest executive branch agencies and stay grounded with voters.

"We've heard the feedback".

Politico first reported Price's use of charter jets for official business earlier this week, and followed that article with a story Thursday that said the secretary has traveled on charter flights at least 24 times since May, citing people familiar with his travel plans and a review of HHS documents. "We take that very seriously and have taken it to heart", Price told Leland Vittert on Fox News' America News Headquarters.

The Health and Human Services inspector general is looking into the matter to see whether the means of travel was appropriate.

"Keep in mind that there are people who need to see this president flop; there are people who need to see this organization fizzle", Price said Saturday. "I don't think there will be any contract trips until the point that this audit is finished".

Price was the only government official on the schedule for that event.

"American taxpayers deserve assurances that their tax dollars are not wasted by the government's highest officials, and we are committed to holding Secretary Price to his stated pledges to reduce waste throughout the Department", the Democratic lawmakers said in a letter. We've heard the worries.

In 2010, when he was a congressman, Price criticized then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) for "flying over our country in a luxury jet".
