Iran successfully tested new ballistic missile, state media reports”

Iran unveiled a new ballistic missile Friday, showing off the weapon during a military parade in Tehran.

"As long as some speak in the language of threats, the strengthening of the country's defence capabilities will continue and Iran will not seek permission from any country for producing various kinds of missile", Defence Minister Amir Hatami said in a staement.

"We are going to strengthen our military capabilities which are necessary for deterrence", Rouhani said at the event, in remarks relayed by the semi-official FARS news agency.

The nose cone of the missile has a range of 1,250 miles (2,000 kilometers) and can carry multiple warheads. "We will strengthen not only our missiles but also our air, land and sea forces".

Iran said on Saturday that it had successfully tested a new medium-range missile in defiance of warnings from the USA that it was ready to ditch a landmark nuclear deal over the issue.

Trump has threatened to bin the nuclear agreement, saying Iran is developing missiles that may be used to deliver a nuclear warhead when the deal's restrictions are lifted in 2025.

There has been some sympathy for the United States position from France, whose President Emmanuel Macron said the deal could be expanded to ban missile tests and cut a sunset clause in the nuclear agreement that would see Iran resume some uranium enrichment from 2025.

Iran has repeatedly insisted that its military capabilities are exclusively aimed for defense purposes and they pose no threat to other countries.

The unveiling came during a military parade on Friday in Tehran.

Trump has repeatedly vowed to pull USA backing from the deal; he has also called for including Iran's missile program.

That makes them only medium-range but still sufficient to reach Israel or U.S. bases in the Gulf.

Iranian state television showed footage of the firing of "Khoramshahr missile" but did not specify if the test-fire happened on Friday or in the past.

The President's critique bolstered the view of those who believe the U.S. will walk away from the Iranian nuclear deal struck under Barack Obama. If he refuses to do so, it could open the door to renewed USA sanctions and the collapse of the deal.

Mr Trump said this week he has reached a decision on the nuclear deal, but hasn't revealed what it is.
