Man Utd and Man City title challenges analysed on The Debate Live

Man Utd and Man City title challenges analysed on The Debate Live”

Manchester United have won four and drawn one of their opening five Premier League games to leave them joint-top of the table alongside Manchester City.

City's impressive start has come off the back of spending over £200million during the off-season, with the likes of Benjamin Mendy, Bernardo Silva, Kyle Walker, Ederson and Danilo all arriving at the Etihad Stadium. Last season, he said heading into the Manchester Derby League Cup match that United were fired up to get revenge for losing the league meeting in September.

United won the Europa League, League Cup and Community Shield in Jose Mourinho's first campaign at the helm but finished a disappointing sixth in the league. "They are under pressure".

"They are obligated to win titles".

United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward said: "We concluded a successful 2016-17 season with a total of three trophies and a return to Champions League football".

Andy Townsend says Man Utd have the strength to be a force in the Premier League title race this season, while Ollie Holt insists the team that finishes above United will win the league, and that team will be rivals Man City. "But I think because of the money they have spent they are the favourites".

The two Manchester clubs now sit atop the Premier League table, with 13 points apiece.

But Mourinho will be hoping that his United players can replicate what his Chelsea side of 2014/15 did once they were caught by City. Whether that means leaving players out, playing them in different positions, over these 10 months I think he'll always be right in there with this United team. "We are pleased with the investment in our squad and look forward to an exciting season". Paul Pogba is our most free midfielder and I can learn from him as well.

"Real Madrid are going to talk about it every summer because he is the best 'keeper in the world. I don't think they've really been tested, apart from Everton at the start of the second half". "We won three titles last season, the only English team to do it", he added.
