Rouhani at United Nations defends Iran nuclear deal against 'rogue newcomers'

Rouhani at United Nations defends Iran nuclear deal against 'rogue newcomers'”

"Rocket Man is on a suicide mission for himself and for his regime", Trump said.

"What it is is a clear signal that he's not happy with the deal", Haley told CBS News in an interview.

The move is a direct challenge to US President Donald Trump, who signed a bill imposing mandatory penalties on those involved in Iran's ballistic missile programme and anyone who does business with them.

Retaliating to the remarks of Trump, Iran's President Hassan Rouhani, during the military parade today, said, "No one can take away the right of Iran to defend itself".

UN inspectors say Iran has fulfilled its commitments to give up its nuclear activities under the agreement, which was reached with the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany. Instead, Trump threatened to unravel the widely supported, hard-won 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and six world powers that verifiably blocks Iran's path to a bomb.

In Trump's first address to the United Nations, he described Iran as a "corrupt dictatorship" and "rogue state", calling for a nuclear agreement between Tehran and several world powers - including the US - to be ultimately scrapped. "Most people would say 'there's no chance whatsoever, '" Trump said as he began a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in NY ahead of the U.N. General Assembly's meeting.

If Trump, who as recently as Thursday accused Iran of violating "the spirit" of the deal, chooses not to certify, the pact could unravel, possibly triggering a regional arms race.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson emphasized Wednesday that the U.S. is asking its allies to factor Iran's broader activities, not just its nuclear program, in considering additional sanctions against the longtime USA foe. He added that the world was made less safe by the Iran agreement as it stands, particularly at a time when the USA and its allies are being threatened directly by a nuclear-armed North Korea. Iran's president, meanwhile, lashed out at "ignorant, absurd and hateful rhetoric" in response to Trump's blistering attack at the United Nations.

Trump then took on the Iranian government, saying it was "a corrupt dictatorship behind the false guise of a democracy".

Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu also slammed Iran in his speech to the U.N. General Assembly.

The Republican president, who has called the agreement struck under his Democratic predecessor, Barack Obama, "the worst deal ever negotiated", made no secret of his views during a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron.

"By violating its global commitments, the new USA administration only destroys its own credibility and undermines worldwide confidence in negotiating with it or accepting its word or promise", Rouhani said.

"I think we have a pretty good shot", Trump said.

In any event, the U.S. We didn't throw shoes at one another. -Iranian exchanges augured poorly for the diplomatic meeting, although Tillerson maintained that the atmosphere had been "very open and candid".

But Trump, while gauging the chances of a deal, added, "We will see if we can put it together".

Trump has said repeatedly that he is inclined not to certify Iranian compliance after having twice found the country compliant at earlier deadlines.

The rhetorical threats have anxious the other countries who are part of the agreement: Britain, China, France, Germany and Russian Federation. If the US tries to activate globally enforceable sanctions on Iran again, European countries could balk, another potential repercussion Trump must weigh.
