Rouhani defends Iran nuclear deal at United Nations against 'rogue newcomers'”

It wasn't clear if Trump had made a final decision to leave or stick with the Iran deal. The meeting marked the highest-level U.S. We are the same people who rescued the Jews dom Babylonian servitude; opened our arms to welcome Armenian Christians in our midst, and created the "Iranian cultural continent" with a unique mix of diverse religions and ethnicities. EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini said there was "no need" to re-negotiate the deal, while Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif flatly said that the agreement was "not (re) negotiable".

But Tillerson said the discussion had been a political one and that even if Iran is in "technical" compliance with the pact, "significant differences" remain.

On Tuesday, in his speech before scores of world leaders at the U.N.G.A., Mr. Trump had severe words for Iran and the nuclear agreement, calling it, "one of the worst and most one-sided transactions the USA has ever entered" and an "embarrassment to the U.S". He condemned Washington's "verbosity, especially the very insolent remarks by the president of the country". "That's been a very lucky word for me and many millions of people".

In remarks to a top clerical body, the Assembly of Experts, carried by his website, Khamenei described Trump and the U.S. administration as "having no brains".

The rhetorical threats have anxious the other countries who are part of the agreement: Britain, China, France, Germany and Russian Federation.

Trump frequently disparaged the agreement during his 2016 presidential campaign on the grounds that it allowed Iran to continue its ballistic missile program, and provide too few guarantees that Iran not pursue a nuclear weapons program years down the road when key provision that limit Iran's capacity to enrich uranium would be lifted.

The previous U.S. administration accepted that the deal was limited to the nuclear issue, and hailed it as a victory for Barack Obama's non-proliferation agenda. In his speech the day before, Mr. Trump had also called Iran a "rogue nation".

"We are recognising the complexities of dealing with the Middle East, where there are no straight lines to choose from", said P.R. Kumaraswamy, Professor of Middle Eastern Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University.

Tillerson said Iran continues to prop up the "horrible" regime of Syria's Bashar al-Assad, carry out banned missile tests and harass shipping in the Gulf.

"I have said many times that the agreement is working fine", and the International Atomic Energy Agency "confirmed several times that Iran is fulfilling its obligations", Mogherini said Monday.

"North Korea is getting £2bn a year from Iran".

He blasted the nuclear pact as "one of the worst and most one-sided transactions the United States has ever entered into", and he hinted that he might renounce it.

"We call upon them to join this date with history", he said.

President Trump told reporters Wednesday at the United Nations General Assembly in NY that he has "decided" on what he will do about the Iran nuclear deal, although he isn't saying yet what that decision is.

"It would be a great pity if this agreement were to be destroyed by rogue newcomers to the world of politics; the world will have lost a great opportunity". Trump must next certify by October 15 if Iran is complying with the deal, and officials have said Trump may use that occasion to declare Iran in violation. "By violating its worldwide commitments, the new USA administration only destroys its own credibility and undermines global confidence in negotiating with it or accepting its word or promise", Rouhani said. "It was a very, very matter of fact exchange about how we see this agreement very differently".

Iran's President Hassan Rouhani said Wednesday the Iranian people are waiting for an apology from U.S. President Donald Trump for his "extremely offensive" rhetoric and "unfounded" allegations about his country.

If, as now appears increasingly likely, he decides that it is not, it could open the way for renewed USA sanctions and perhaps the collapse of the agreement.

"I have decided. I'll let you know what the decision is", he said.
