Trump Vs. Jong-un: The ultimate chest-beating contest

Trump Vs. Jong-un: The ultimate chest-beating contest”

He said his mission was North Korea's "complete denuclearization".

The North could still choose to follow through on this threat. Washington has been pushing China to scale back economic and financial ties to further isolate Pyongyang.

Returning insult with insult, Kim said the president was "unfit to hold the prerogative of supreme command of a country".

In a rare

Asked ahead of a lunch meeting with the leaders of Japan and South Korea on Thursday if diplomacy was still possible, Trump nodded and said: "Why not?"

"Trump and South Korean President Moon Jae-in have agreed to Seoul's "acquisition and development of highly advanced military assets" and to increased deployment of US strategic assets in and around South Korea on a rotational basis", the White House said on Friday.

Since Trump won the presidential election in November, tensions between North Korea and the US have been rapidly increasing as the North continues to test and attempt to expand its nuclear arsenal.

The South Korean government, which has sought a dialogue with North Korea, called Kim's statement a "reckless provocation" that would deepen the North's worldwide isolation and lead to its demise.

He also discounted Trump's attacks on Kim's mental stability, telling Tapper that "I'll vote for sane, rational, calculating, within his context".

This came just days after Trump threatened to "totally destroy" North Korea if it continued with its nuclear weapons development. He warned the nuclear issue had to be managed stably so that "accidental military clashes will not destroy peace".

North Korea's Foreign Minister Ri Yong-ho on Wednesday termed Trump's speech at UNGA as "sound of a dog barking".

In recent months, the North has launched a pair of intercontinental missiles believed capable of striking the continental United States and another pair that soared over Japanese territory.

A Friday commentary from the North's official Korean Central News Agency accused the party newspaper People's Daily and other party news outlets of "kowtowing to the ignorant acts of the Trump Administration". Nuclear weapons are the most powerful devices ever developed by human beings. Trump announced the measures Thursday as he met leaders from South Korea and Japan, the nations most immediately imperiled by North Korea's threats of a military strike.

Still, the impasse is no closer to being resolved.

A senior US diplomat says a North Korean hydrogen bomb test in the Pacific would be an "unprecedented act of aggression" by the communist nation. American officials say the time isn't right for any formal diplomatic process.
