Brexit: Theresa May restates 'no Irish border posts' policy”

"When it comes to making a recommendation as to whether sufficient progress has been made, it's too early to say".

Leo Varadkar has said he pushed Theresa May for "specifics" on plans for the Irish border post-Brexit during Downing Street talks.

Speaking as he left Downing Street, Mr Varadkar said it was not possible "at this stage" to say sufficient progress had been made on the border issue.

About efforts on the formation of a devolved government in Northern Ireland, the British prime minister said the issue was discussed with the visiting Irish leader.

The Taoiseach also praised Mrs May's assertion in her Florence speech that there should be "no physical infrastructure" on the Irish border after the United Kingdom splits from the EU.

"We both want to avoid changes to the way citizens enjoy their rights and our proposals will deliver that".

Britain said last month that there should be no border posts or immigration checks along the 500 km (300 miles) frontier after Brexit.

Last month, the EU's chief negotiator, Michel Barnier, said that some of the suggestions anxious him. Britain is anxious to move on to the next phase of the Brexit process as soon as possible, which will involve talks on future trade relations between the European Union and UK.

"Our time in Brussels gives us the flawless chance to highlight the challenges Brexit brings for environmental protection and to articulate how these issues can be averted through continued cross-border cooperation and the maintenance of high environmental standards both North and South".

Plant and animal species could become extinct in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland because of Brexit, environmentalists warned.

"Real progress on three main issues - citizens, Ireland, financial settlement - is essential to move to the discussion on transition and on the future (relationship)".

Mr Varadkar is the first European Union leader to visit Mrs May since her crucial speech in Florence last week, where she made a series of concessions in a bid to kickstart talks with the EU.

The agenda includes the stalemate in Northern Ireland and although the Taoiseach will cautiously welcome Ms May's Brexit speech from Florence he'll continue to raise concerns that the British government has not set out a clear solution to the border.

The politicians are due to discuss developments on Brexit, including the future of the Irish border, the Common Travel Area and provisions to ensure the Northern Ireland peace process is protected.

"We owe it to the people of Northern Ireland - and indeed to everyone on the island of Ireland - to see through these commitments".
