Cleveland Cavaliers 'hopeful' Isaiah Thomas will return by January”

Point guard Isaiah Thomas' looming Cleveland Cavaliers debut remains a somewhat mysterious storyline, but it's going to be one of the key plot points of the upcoming National Basketball Association campaign. In addition to Thomas, the Cavs acquired forward Jae Crowder, center Ante Zizic, the Brooklyn Nets' 2018 first-round pick and a future second-round pick in exchange for Irving. Thomas will be in position to return by January, the organization said in a statement Monday.

The Cavs medical staff's approach to Thomas has been led by Dr. James Rosneck, a renowned hip specialist practicing at the Cleveland Clinic. Kelly treated Thomas when he was still with the Celtics. While the Eastern Conference champions have been encouraged by Thomas' recovery, they will not rush him back.

This is great news for the Cavs, as they'll surely be looking for Thomas to play a big role in their game plans on both ends of the floor. The team is also ruling out surgery as an option for Thomas, sources said.

Cleveland head coach Tyronn Lue announced at the team's media day on Monday that former MVP and free agent acquisition Derrick Rose will start at point guard in Thomas' absence. He averaged 28.9 points, 5.9 assists, 2.7 rebounds, 0.9 steals, and 3.2 3-pointers on.463 percent shooting from the field last season.
