Federer secures Laver Cup victory for Europe

Federer secures Laver Cup victory for Europe”

Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer were in dominant form as Europe built a commanding 9-3 lead over the World team on day two of the inaugural Laver Cup.

But Federer bailed out Nadal with a comeback win over Kyrgios in a thrilling match to bring the competition to a close and earn the title.

In the end, however, Federer sealed the title in a match tiebreak - the sixth of the weekend, and 18th tiebreak in all - recovering from 8-5 down and saving a match point at 9-8 to secure Team Europe's triumph.

Despite cruising through the first two days, the Europeans needed the last match to finalize the victory and show the dominance expected from a team featuring five of the world's top seven players.

However, the all-star pairing stepped up at crunch time to claim a 6-4 1-6 1-0 (10/5) victory which leaves Bjorn Borg's European team firmly in control going into Sunday's final day, where the four matches are worth three points each. That is what a team member does.

"I just take a knee to remember those before I go out there and play".

Let's just hope that it was being watched by the beleaguered International Tennis Federation (ITF), whose Davis Cup competition increasingly feels like an analogue event in a digital age.

"I'm most proud of these guys - they fought with their heart and soul and put everything into this", John McEnroe said in tribute to his underdog squad during the trophy ceremony.
