Female HR managers earn £4500 less than male colleagues

Female HR managers earn £4500 less than male colleagues”

The gender pay gap is particularly high in finance, with male managers earning 33.9% more than female peers, equating to an average salary difference of more than 18K.

A study conducted by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) of salaries across 432 organisations reveals that men in senior management positions are likely earning on average £11,606 more than their female peers, putting the pay gap at 26.8 per cent when taking into account bonuses, and perks like auto allowances and commission.

Researchers also found that women are far more likely to fill junior management positions than men (66% compared with 34%).

New rules came into force in April this year stipulating that employers with more than 250 employees must publicly disclose the size of their gender pay gap. But even when only salaries are considered for this year's data, the analysis shows the gap has widened to 23.6%, or £9,326.

"The picture is worst at the top, with male CEOs cashing-in bonuses six times larger than female counterparts", she added.

The average salary of a female manager in the Midlands is £30,038, including bonuses and commission, compared to £42,745 for men, according to the report.

Making the effort to report accurately and tackle the problem is "essential if United Kingdom companies are to survive and thrive in the post-Brexit world", she said.

The findings, which are based on a survey of almost 120,000 employees from 432 organisations, revealed that women are far more likely to fill junior management roles compared to men.

The CMI/XpertHR research found the overall gender pay gap to be 26.8%; in HR it was just 10.0%.

XpertHR Content Director Mark Crail said: 'Some people have tried to explain the gender pay gap away as being the result of different working hours or individual career choices.

Last year, analyses of managers' basic salaries had put the gap at 23.1 per cent, or £8,964.

The CMI said that only 77 out of 7,850 eligible employers had provided data to the Government so far.

For managers, men outpaced women by 3.7 to 3.5 per cent (whereas they took home 3.0 and 3.2 per cent increases the year before).

The CMI also said previous research found that four out of five managers had witnessed some form of gender discrimination in the workplace. "It's essential if United Kingdom companies are to survive and thrive in the post-Brexit world".

But there was evidence of the financial benefits of gender diversity from a separate report out today by energy giant SSE, which said it was the first FTSE 100 company to publish its gender pay gap.
