Gov. Scott deleted nursing home voicemails ahead of deaths

Gov. Scott deleted nursing home voicemails ahead of deaths”

"Right now, we're in a he said, she said".

Roughly 36 hours before the first of 11 heated-related deaths occurred at the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills, which lost air conditioning after Hurricane Irma knocked out power to one of the facility's transformers, Rick Scott's personal cell phone reportedly received a series of voice mails asking for "immediate assistance".

But now the voice mails are gone.

Hollywood police say 11 patients from the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills have died. However, the center's administrators are saying the calls to Scott were actual pleas for help.

The information from the messages was collected and distributed to the proper agencies before the voicemails were deleted, a spokesperson for Scott's office said in a statement, according to The Washington Post.

According to a timeline released by the governor's office, the governor's aides received the initial call from the rehabilitation facility September 11 at 7:35 p.m. Florida Department of Health Chief of Staff Alexis Lambert reportedly returned the call two hours later. State health administrators allegedly returned the call later the same day, according to the report.

According to the lawsuit, the facility failed to secure "reliable and effective air-conditioning systems to operate in the event of an inevitable and foreseeable power outage", leaving the elderly residents to suffer for days "in extreme heat and deplorable conditions".

Scott's office, however, says the calls never indicated an emergency, and that the information was passed on to the appropriate state agencies.

The state has aggressively laid fault on the facility in Hollywood, Florida. "Also, these patients were not timely evacuated to the air-conditioned hospital located across the street".

Scott has issued an emergency order requiring all nursing homes and assisted living facilities to equip back-up generators within 90 days to prevent such deaths in the future.

Court records indicate the initial investigation also suggested nursing home staff may have written late entries in medical records to alter the appearance of the situation inside the facility.
