Guajataca dam in Puerto Rico fails in aftermath of Hurricane Maria

Guajataca dam in Puerto Rico fails in aftermath of Hurricane Maria”

Hurricane Maria has left the nation's power grid in pieces.

The government has confirmed 10 storm-related deaths in the population of 3.6 million people.

The initiative's website lists organizations with which New Yorkers can volunteer, along with a Puerto Rico Relief & Rebuilding Fund at New York Community Trust, where you can donate, and a list of collection points managed by the National Guard, where people can drop off supplies and other donations.

"Very nervous about what is going on", says Guzman.

People seeking information about Maria's survivors in Puerto Rico can visit the American Red Cross' Safe & Well website. "Our team has a wide range of medical expertise and is prepared to deliver a range of health services, hygiene promotion and psychosocial support", said Chris Skopec, Executive Vice President, responsible for Global Health and Disaster Response Programs.

Brig. Gen. Diana Holland of the Army Corps of Engineers says that 95-100 percent of the island is still without power.

On the northwest part of the island, authorities had to physically go to thousands of residents to warn them of a potential dam collapse near the Guajataca River. "So we know the people who need it are going to get what they need", explained Elizabeth Berumen. The airline sent just one more plane to the island over the weekend. Captain Rodriguez said a huge portion of his family remains in Puerto Rico and, quite frankly, he's terrified.

"We continue to be in contact with our federal counterparts and emergency management officials in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands as recovery efforts continue", the governor said. "The devastation in Puerto Rico has set us back almost 20 to 30 years", said Puerto Rico Resident Commissioner Jenniffer Gonzalez. The waves will increase along the Mid-Atlantic coast Saturday night and Sunday. "That's how much debris was blown and flown everywhere", said Ramos. It's the only access to cellphone service for miles. "The structure has been significantly compromised". Either way, Ramos said he knows the resilience of Puerto Ricans and he has no doubt they will bounce back.

"We're trying to communicate to our families in the United States", said Jose Flores, who traveled 17 miles to reach the tower.

"It's pretty nerve wracking and stressful, but you try to stay positive", said Gerardo Colon, of Cleveland, who has not heard from his parents or grandparents since the storm hit.
