NBA, NCAA champs will skip White House visit after Trump attacks

NBA, NCAA champs will skip White House visit after Trump attacks”

John Angelos, the Orioles executive vice president and son of managing partner Peter G. Angelos, on Saturday condemned president Donald Trump's attacks on athletes and expressed support for those who use their platform in professional sports to advance their causes. But that's not the only pro sport the president is feuding with. "LeBron and Steph and any owner, it's an open door now and so they have every right, for the same reasons, to be able to say whatever is on their mind".

Curry's remarks followed similar comments by teammate Kevin Durant last month, who accused Trump of escalating racial tensions.

Curry told a press conference that his beliefs were "cemented even further about how things in our country are going" after Mr Trump's comments.

Sports politics, once waged by pioneers like Muhammad Ali and Jackie Robinson, but now largely confined to tussles between multi-millionaire players and multi-billionaire owners, suddenly became consumed once more by questions of civil rights, freedom, and what it means to be an American.

The president was referring to a string of protests, initiated by NFL player Colin Kaepernick, of kneeling when the national anthem played to protest the brutality and violence black people face at the hands of the police.

"That's a pretty strong statement", he said. Going to White House was a great honour until you showed up!' Kerr has said that it's Trump's actions, not just his words, that upset him.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell hit back at Trump's criticism, calling his comments "divisive" and showing an "unfortunate lack of respect".

Well, not bending the knee is how you disrespect the US.

"If NFL fans refuse to go to games until players stop disrespecting our flag & country, you will see change take place fast".

"The amount of support I saw around the league this morning was fantastic", Curry said.

Trump started by announcing that Curry, the immensely popular two-time MVP for the Golden State Warriors, would not be welcome at the White House for the commemorative visit traditionally made by championship teams after Curry indicated he didn't want to come.

"That's a total disrespect of everything that we stand for", Trump said, encouraging owners to act. The strong likelihood is that the Cavaliers, who visited with former President Barack Obama last November to celebrate their 2016 National Basketball Association title, will likely be the last National Basketball Association team to take part in such a ceremony during Trump's time in office, with his first term set to end in January 2021.

On Friday, Curry told ESPN that no matter what the team decided, they would be guided by the hope of sending "a statement that hopefully encourages unity, encourages us to appreciate what it means to be American and stand for something". More than 100 football players responded by kneeling during the national anthem Sunday, while others around the league locked arms in solidarity.
