NFL Sunday night ratings down amid kneeling protest

In the preliminary metered-market results, NBC Sports coverage of Sunday Night Football was down about 10 percent versus last year's comparable matchup. That's down 11% from early numbers for the third week of the season past year.

The NBC match-up between Oakland and Washington averaged an overnight 11.6 rating among households.

Commissioner Roger Goodell tweeted a link to the ad Sunday morning on a day that figures to feature unprecedented player demonstrations after three days of criticism by President Donald Trump. The bottom line is that while the overnight ratings aren't bad, they weren't great either. "People are watching less and the thing people don't realize is that NFL's decline got a lot of attention last season but the decline was happening before that". Sunday Night Football alone has been averaging 22.3 million viewers in its first two weeks - and, just as advantegously, a 8.1 rating in the key demo of adults 18-49.

During last year's regular season, National Football League ratings were off by 8 percent compared to the previous year, and during the first two weeks of this season, ratings were down 11 percent from the comparable period last year, according to Ad Age. As for the latest entry in the Star Trek franchise, telling numbers will come later Sunday. "Discovery", the most expensive series in CBS history, debuted on the broadcast network, with all subsequent episodes set to premiere on premium service CBS All Access.
