Rajiv Mehrishi Takes Over as New CAG”

Rajiv Mehrishi takes oath as the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG).

Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of Rajasthan cadre, Mehrishi had completed his two- year fixed term as the home secretary in August. The new CAG of India replaces the former CAG Shashi Kant Sharma whose tenure ended on 25th of September. He was defence secretary prior to his appointment as the CAG.

The CAG is a constitutional functionary that audits the accounts of the state and central governments.

The CAG is appointed for a term of six years or till the incumbent attains the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier.

Sharma's appointment came at a time when the CAG has come under sharp attack from the government and ruling party for its reports on assessment of Rs 1.76 lakh crore loss in allocation of 2G spectrum.

Born in Rajasthan in 1955, Mehrishi is an alumnus of St Xavier's School, Jaipur and holds a Master's and Bachelors degree from St Stephens College in Delhi in History. The top bureaucrat also holds a degree in Management in Business administration from University of Strathclyde, Glasgow.

He was appointed Union Home Secretary in August, 2015.

Mehrishi was the Indian Government's Finance Secretary and worked in the Ministries of Petroleum, Corporate Affairs, Overseas Indian Affairs, and Chemicals and Fertilizers.
