The real reason why Ruud van Nistelrooy left Manchester United in 2006

The real reason why Ruud van Nistelrooy left Manchester United in 2006”

And what really happened between the Dutch superstar and Sir Alex Ferguson has finally been revealed.

But 11 years after his departure from Old Trafford, a segment from a book released by former Labour communications chief Alastair Campbell has revealed another possible reason behind his departure and it involves Cristiano Ronaldo.

As revealed in the Times, Campbell notes how Van Nistlerooy had become hard to manage and came across as rather self-centred, leaving Ferguson unsure with what to do with the player. Very self-centred. The last straw was when he told Cristiano Ronaldo he had found a new dad in Carlos [Queiroz, Ferguson's assistant] - just after Ronaldo's dad, who was an alcoholic, had died.

"He later apologised but CR was not having it".

"He was not sure what he was going to do with him".

The Dutchman enjoyed a prolific five years with United, scoring 95 Premier League goals in 150 appearances for the Red Devils, before heading to Real Madrid for €14million.

The author mentioned: "In 2006, I've met Alex Ferguson and he was extremely upset because of a conflict between Cristiano Ronaldo and Ruud Van Nistelroy".

He claims, as is the popularly held belief, that Ferguson was beginning to believe that van Nistelrooy was getting too big for his shoes and that he was already thinking of throwing him out when an incident with Cristiano Ronaldo seemingly forced his hand.

What's more, he did link up with Van Nistelrooy again for one season at Real when Ronaldo made his £80million exit from Manchester.

Asked whether he wanted to leave United because he felt Ferguson was supporting other players and not giving him the support he deserved, Van Nistelrooy replied: "You summed up my feelings quite well".
