US expands travel ban to include North Korea, Venezuela, Chad”

A new extended travel ban announced by Donald Trump's administration will restrict travel to the United States from North Korea and Venezuela, as well as from Iran, Chad, Libya, Syria, Yemen and Somalia - countries included in previous bans - based on "security or safety threat".

Critics said the original ban as well as the second one discriminated against Muslims, violating the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment, which forbids the government from favoring any religion over another.

President Donald Trump walks towards the White House in Washington on Sunday after speaking to reporters upon his return.

"We will not admit those into our country we can not safely vet", Trump explained. Under the new restrictions, eight nations now have complete or partial blocks on travel to the United States. The original ban on travel from certain Muslim-majority countries was issued via an executive order a week after Trump took office and took effect immediately, causing chaos at airports and leaving many worldwide students and scholars who happened to be outside the U.S.at the time the executive order was signed temporarily stranded. The US has recently praised Sudan's efforts in fighting terrorism ahead of a decision expected in October on whether to lift decades-old sanctions on Khartoum.

Iran, Libya, Syria, Yemen and Somalia were left on the list of affected countries in a new proclamation issued by the president on Sunday.

The restrictions on Venezuela target the country's leadership and their family members.

For anyone who was subject to entry restrictions under Executive Order 13780, the restrictions began today, Sep. After a detailed review and discussion with the countries' officials on the list, DHS declared 16 countries as "inadequate" and 31 others at risk of becoming inadequate. Iraq, including the level of audit is however very low, has not been included because it is a close ally which receives a significant number of military and civilians, he stressed. But US-bound travelers there will face much tougher vetting. Trump huddled with Duke, Attorney General Jeff Sessions, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, his director of national intelligence and his national security adviser yesterday to discuss the issue, White House spokeswoman Lindsay Walters said.

The Trump Administration says it shared these new requirements with foreign governments in July, and countries "that did not have adequate information-sharing practices in place" were given 50 days to make necessary improvements.

The new directive largely suspends travel to the United States for immigrants and nonimmigrants with certain types of visas from Chad, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Syria, and Yemen.

Federal judges again blocked the measure before the Supreme Court in June announced that it would hear the case and allowed an even narrower version of the presidential order to take effect.

The ban was frozen by courts after a weekend of chaos at airports and a barrage of lawsuits by immigration advocates and civil liberties groups. "The inclusion of those countries, Venezuela and North Korea, was about the fact that those governments are simply not compliant with our basic security requirements". "You can't get any more transparent than that".

Trump's original travel ban, impacting the six majority-Muslim nations, was roundly slammed for being needlessly discriminatory, haphazard, and divisive.
