'US Rail Safety Week' raises crossing, trespassing awareness”

26, during the first U.S. Rail Safety Week, which is September 24-30, Indiana Operation Lifesaver, the nonprofit rail safety education organization, will join with Amtrak and local, state, federal and railroad law enforcement officers for Operation Clear Track, a one-day, three-hour surge to raise awareness and enforce railroad grade crossing and trespassing laws in states across the U.S.

"Operation Clear Track" will be the largest simultaneous railroad safety law enforcement operation ever attempted in the country.

To promote rail safety awareness and education during Illinois Rail Safety Week, the Naperville Police Department will be participating in enforcement details at various railroad grade crossings and commuter stations within Naperville to cite both drivers and pedestrians who disobey the laws associated with railroad grade crossings and railroad property.

While vehicle-train collisions in the USA have dropped by 83 percent in the last four decades, there are still more than 2,000 vehicle-train collisions annually across the US, and a year ago saw more than 900 injuries and fatalities to people walking, playing or taking photos on train tracks.

National Rail Safety Week runs from September 24-30 with a kick-off event in Greensboro on Monday.

In 2016, there were 116 railroad crossing collisions resulting in 10 fatalities and 36 injuries in the state of Indiana. A national network of trained volunteers gives free presentations on rail safety and a public awareness campaign, "See Tracks?"

If you think you'd hear a train before it got too close, experts warn that that's a misconception - someone on the tracks often can't hear one approaching until it's too late because of how fast trains can travel.

In addition to the state proclamation naming this week Illinois Rail Safety Week, Operation Lifesaver has declared the same week as national Rail Safety Week.
