AG Schimel subpoenas Equifax for info on compromised Wisconsinites in breach”

Andover Sen. Barbara L'Italien, along with her House counterpart and Attorney General Maura Healey, introduced new legislation Monday created to protect victims of Equifax's recent data breach.

Provisions in the bill would grant consumers a free credit freeze if their information is at risk while requiring all credit reports be encrypted.

"This bill sends a message that MA is serious about protecting consumers and their financial security", said Sen.

Equifax announced earlier this month that a breach exposed social security numbers and other data from about 143 million Americans. "L'Italien and Rep. Benson as MA leads the charge for our country's consumers".

MA consumers would also be able to freeze and unfreeze their credit for free, an action that typically costs between $5 and $10.

Under the new bill, credit agencies that experience a data breach-like Equifax-would be required to pay for each MA customer's request for a credit freeze or thaw.

Attorney General Maura Healey is already suing Equifax.

Under the proposed legislation, MA consumers would have access to additional free credit reports and free credit monitoring if their data was involved in a breach.

"The whole point is to make sure you're the one in control", Healey said. "With the Equifax breach, we learned how easy it is for our personal information to be compromised, and the urgency of ensuring additional protection for consumers and our credit and financial information", she added.

In a statement, Equifax said it is conducting an internal investigation and is working with the FBI. "The reporting agency should have been the keeper of the vault". "This bill will change that by requiring those credit reporting agencies to put in place a simple, one-stop-shop for freezing or unfreezing credit reports".
