Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee Took a Knee on the House Floor

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee Took a Knee on the House Floor”

In strong protest to Trump's deviant statements made during a rally in Alabama last Friday, Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Tex.) gave a fervent speech from the House floor Monday night and took a knee to decry the racist rhetoric she believes was interlaced in Trump's remarks. " "Wouldn't you love to see one of these National Football League owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, 'Get that son of a bitch off the field right now-out, he's fired", he told the crowd before spending the weekend (and well into Monday) tweeting about this issue".

The protest originated with former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who started taking a knee during the national anthem previous year to draw attention to racial injustice.

"I kneel in front of the flag on the House floor", she said. "That is racism. You can not deny it, you can not run for it".

"There is no regulation that says that these young men can not stand against the dishonoring of their mothers by you calling them 'fire the son of a b.' You tell me which of those children's mothers is a son of a b".

"I kneel in honor of the 1st Amendment". And I kneel in honor of them. "I kneel in front of the flag and on this floor", Jackson Lee declared. There is nothing wrong with kneeling down to stand up against injustice. "There is no regulation that says these young men can not stand against the dishonoring of their mothers".

'The only reason he is doing this, ' she said, 'is that someone had the lack of judgment to provoke the situation and call their mothers a name'.

On Monday, Jackson Lee and the Congressional Black Caucus joined the chorus of criticism. Three teams-the Tennessee Titans, Seattle Seahawks and Pittsburgh Steelers-stayed largely in their locker rooms during the national anthem at their respective games, though Pittsburgh offensive tackle Alejandro Villanueva, a former U.S. Army Ranger who served in Afghanistan, stood at the edge of the field and sung the anthem.

Athletes all over the country offered their own form of protest - some of them raising a fist while others linked arms during the anthem - in wake of Trump's comments.

'I refuse to accept that as a standard of leadership for the highest office in the world'.
