Dubai is 'fourth most popular city in the world'

Dubai is 'fourth most popular city in the world'”

For the second year in a row, Bangkok is poised to be the most popular city in the world for worldwide travelers.

The Thai capital is projected to welcome almost 20.2 million worldwide overnight visitors this year, according to a report by financial services corporation Mastercard.

On a global scale, out of 132 cities, Singapore was the fifth most visited in 2016 - up from sixth in 2015 - while NY dropped one position to the sixth at 12.7 million visitors.

Of the world's largest cities, Bangkok had the most worldwide visitors stay overnight last year, but MasterCard predicts that Tokyo will see the most growth this year.

Top of the global list was Bangkok, followed by London, Paris and Dubai, all retaining their positions from 2015.

It also showed that 2016 was the second year in a row that China emerged as Singapore's top-spending market, beating Indonesia, which has traditionally been the top spender.

The emirate welcomed 14.87 million worldwide overnight visitors in 2016, with an expected continued growth of 7.7 per cent for 2017. Dubai, coming in at No. 4, expects to see just over 16 million worldwide visitors in 2017. NY and London rank second and third, respectively, in spending.

"Another interesting insight that has surfaced from the GDCI 2017 findings is that travel and tourism spending is higher than global GDP growth". Abu Dhabi, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 18.9 per cent between 2009 and 2016 in its growth of visitors, also retained its position as the fastest growing city in the Middle East and Africa, and is the fourth fastest growing city globally.

"KL is a leader among Asia-Pacific countries for leisure tourism as 92.2% of visitors who entered the city in 2016 did so for leisure purposes", Mastercard Advisors senior vice president for Asia-Pacific Eric Schneider told a media briefing today.
