Ferdinand: Half of Liverpool's back four isn't good enough

Ferdinand: Half of Liverpool's back four isn't good enough”

Southampton defender Maya Yoshida knows Virgil van Dijk's return to the squad will make it even more hard to hold down a place in the starting line-up but says the increased competition can only be good for the Premier League club.

The former Celtic man has not started a game for eight months following an injury he picked up against Leicester in January - he was given 10 minutes against Crystal Palace and was an unused substitute against Manchester United.

The Dutchman's return from his first-team exile is keeping Yoshida, Wesley Hoedt and Jack Stephens on their toes but the Japan worldwide knows added competition can only be good for the Premier League club.

He said, as quoted by Sky Sports: "It's really tough, I understand".

Klopp brought in left-back Andy Robertson, but after their failed pursuit of Virgil van Dijk, he decided not to sign a centre-back, leaving them with Lovren, Joel Matip and Ragnar Klavan as their best options in that area.

"The more money you get, the stronger you are financially and then you're able to keep hold of your best players". It's only the things I can do.

"(With) my experience in the last couple of years, I am pretty sure that kind of pressure makes me stronger.

The Reds have been criticised for their shaky performances at the back this season and the Merseyside outfit conceded another two goals during their 3-2 win over Leicester in the Premier League on Saturday. "They made a few chances, but, playing against a top team, the small detail makes a big difference". It's really hard to accept but that is why they are top of the table. Was letting Sakho go the wrong decision?
