May and Varadkar to discuss Brexit plans

May and Varadkar to discuss Brexit plans”

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar is due to meet British Prime Minister Theresa May in London today to discuss Brexit, and the continuing political stalemate in Northern Ireland.

Speaking as he left No10, Mr Varadkar said "at this stage" he could not say sufficient progress had been made on the border issue to clear the first stage of talks with the EU. Talks can not move past this first stage unless...

He revealed Theresa May had backed Ireland's bid in writing - but was forced to deal with suggestions that Brexit could derail the country's hopes of beating France and South Africa to win hosting rights.

In her speech last week, Mrs May said the United Kingdom was ready to cover the huge hole left in Brussels' finances for another two years after we formally leave in 2019 - contributing potentially another 20 billion euros - and meet other liabilities that could total tens of billions more.

The Government is working on a "practical solution" to deal with the border issue, Downing Street said.

Britain said last month that there should be no border posts or immigration checks along the 500 km (300 miles) frontier after Brexit.

The fourth round of negotiations resumed between Britain and the European Union yesterday. Britain is anxious to move on to the next phase of the Brexit process as soon as possible, which will involve talks on future trade relations between the European Union and UK.

"Real progress on three main issues - citizens, Ireland, financial settlement - is essential to move to the discussion on transition and on the future (relationship)".

Heading for a meeting with British chief negotiator David Davis to start a fourth round of divorce negotiations, Barnier said he expected London to translate the proposals made by May in her speech into formal negotiating positions.

IFA president Joe Healy says the British Prime Minister's Brexit speech in Italy on Friday was disappointing.

He said Dublin wanted to make sure that the close relationship built up between the two countries in recent years is maintained after Brexit, as well as the common travel area.
