Mercedes-Benz to Build Electric Cars in North America

Mercedes-Benz to Build Electric Cars in North America”

Tesla's worst nightmare might be exported to North America from Forrest Gump country. That kind of upheaval has the ability to make or break even the largest companies in the world, so to secure a future for itself, Reuters claims that Daimler is investing big bucks in self-driving electric SUVs.

"With production locations for electric vehicles and batteries in Europe, China and, now, the USA, our global network is ready for the era of electric vehicles", CNN quoted Markus Schäfer, the automaker's head of production planning. The first model set for production is called the EQC, shown here. The investment will go both to an expansion of the German luxury brand's existing plant near Tuscaloosa and to build a new 1 million-square-foot battery factory. It is expected that once completed these investments will create more than 600 additional jobs.

Mercedes-Benz is making quite the investment on electric vehicles.

Jason Hoff, president and CEO of Mercedes-Benz U.S. International, said a site has not yet been nailed down for the electric battery factory.

By 2022, Mercedes plans to electrify the entire portfolio of vehicles and offer more than 50 electrified vehicle variants. That could mean you.

In total, Mercedes-Benz plans to invest $1 billion in the expansion of its industrial footprint in the region, most of which is slated for the electric initiative. As in vehicle production, the battery production network will react flexibly and efficiently to market demand.

In addition to developing electric models, Mercedes is working on improving battery technology. Mercedes said it plans to begin construction in 2018 and start production in "the beginning of the next decade".

Hoff said building dimensions for the Global Logistics Center are still being worked out, as are those of the after-sales hub.

Mercedes-Benz is consolidating three existing after-sales warehouses at the new hub, which will supply markets overseas with spare parts.
