North Korea accuses Trump of declaring war”

In a show of might to North Korea, U.S. bombers and fighter escorts flew Saturday to the farthest point north of the border between North and South Korea by any such American aircraft this century.

North Korea's Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho speaks outside the U.N. Plaza Hotel, in New York, Monday, Sept. 25, 2017.

The letter sent on Sunday, whose recipients were not disclosed, by the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Supreme People's Assembly, condemns the "ignorant" comments that US President Donald Trump made in his speech at the United Nations General Assembly on September 19, in which he threatened to "totally destroy" North Korea and referred to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un as "Rocket Man".

This story is breaking and will be updated. Trump also used the derisive reference to Kim in his speech to the U.N. General Assembly on September 19. The U.S. has a "deep arsenal of military options to provide the president so that he can then decide how he wants to deal with North Korea", he said.

"North Korea's weapons program is a grave threat to the Asia-Pacific region and the entire worldwide community".

"The world, including all member states now attending the United Nations General Assembly, must clearly remember that this time, America declared war on us first. We are prepared to use the full range of military capabilities to defend the USA homeland and our allies", White said.

The foreign minister said that Trump, as America's current leader, had issued a "clear declaration of war". After that, the North severed a tenuous diplomatic channel to the State Department, which was renewed once Trump took office.

In response, Kim issued a long statement in which he took the rare step of using the first person - and in which he vowed, "I will surely and definitely tame the mentally deranged USA dotard with fire". Kim's foreign minister told reporters this past week that the North's response to Trump "could be the most powerful detonation of an H-bomb in the Pacific".

Of that flight, Pentagon spokesperson Dana White said, "This is the farthest north of the Demilitarized Zone any US fighter or bomber aircraft have flown off North Korea's coast in the 21st century".
