PH respects Malaysia's dissociation from ASEAN statement on Rohingya”

Anifah was speaking in response to a statement issued by the chairman of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on the matter which he described as "a misrepresentation of the reality of the situation".

Myanmar's military and local Buddhist militia in Rakhine have been blamed for targeting Rohingya civilians in atrocities such as killings and the burnings of hundreds of homes and villages belonging to the minority.

The Rohingya problem had been simmering for a long time, and it will be a stumbling block in Myanmar's road to peace and progress if it remains unresolved.

But she warned that more pressure must be put on Myanmar to take back their refugees.

The DFA confirmed that Malaysia was able to articulate in several Asean meetings in NY about its stand on the issue, but Manila explained that Cayetano had to "respect and take into account the sentiments of the other members of the 10-member regional bloc".

Issued early Sunday, the Chairman statement had expressed the Foreign Minister of Asean's concern over the "humanitarian situation" in the Rakhine state without direct mention of the Rohingya community.

No consensus was reached by the ASEAN foreign ministers, however, said two Malaysian government officials aware of the discussions.

He said that while Malaysia condemned the attacks against Myanmar security by the Rohingyan army, it called the subsequent clearance operations by Myanmar authorities "disproportionate" as it has lead to deaths of civilians and displacement of Rohingyas.

Myanmar rejects the charge and says that most of the 400-odd people killed were insurgents. Ever since the latest flare-up of violence against the community in Myanmar this year, almost 4 lakh Rohingyas have fled the state, pouring into nearby countries like Bangladesh seeking refuge. "Therefore, DAP stands by Wisma Putra's decision to disassociate from the Asean Chairman's statement", the Batu Gajah MP said in a statement today.

The violence began on August 25 when militants from the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) attacked about 30 police posts and an army camp, killing about 12 people.

Myanmar's de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been sharing power with the country's elite military, failed to quell outrage over the plight of the Rohingya as she appealed for patience when she addressed the nation last week. Erdoğan urged the world community to take action to reform worldwide institutions. The president announced that the Turkish prime minister and deputy prime minister would soon pay a visit to Bangladesh in an effort to look for suitable areas to build refugee camps.Underscoring that it is vital to seek a political resolution for the issue, Siddiki urged the global community to give relief and guarantee of life to the unfortunate people of Rohingya as they need this support.
