Some Iowa Guard airmen headed to Puerto Rico

Some Iowa Guard airmen headed to Puerto Rico”

A group of Iowa National Guard members had less than 24 hours to pack their bags and say "yes" to a humanitarian mission to Puerto Rico.

The 185th Air Refueling Wing from Sioux City will provide eight security forces personnel and will also transport the security team to Puerto Rico via KC-135R Stratotanker aircraft. Because there's no power for runway lights in Puerto Rico, the airmen remained in Iowa on Monday night before heading to the US territory on Tuesday morning. But due to the catastrophic devastation in Puerto Rico, Hapgood says security assistance is key towards stabilizing the USA territory.

CT sent a second cargo plane and seven more National Guardsmen to the Caribbean on Saturday to help with recovery efforts following the destruction caused by Hurricane Maria.

State officials are in contact with federal counterparts and emergency management officials in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands as recovery efforts continue, Malloy said.

"This marks the fourth time in recent history in which the 185th Security Forces personnel has offer its assistance", Walker said. "We also offered assistance following flooding in eastern Iowa in 2008, as well as when the Missouri River flooded in 2011". "We want to provide a service to those people in a time of crisis".
