Thousands Flee Bali's Mount Agung After Volcano Threat Level Is Raised

Thousands Flee Bali's Mount Agung After Volcano Threat Level Is Raised”

Thousands of evacuees are living in temporary shelters, sports centers, village halls and with relatives or friends.

In Klungkung, Jokowi is also scheduled to visit an emergency response station to see how authorities are preparing for the possible eruption.

Almost 50,000 people have fled the Mount Agung volcano on the Indonesian tourist island of Bali, fearing an imminent eruption as dozens of tremors rattle the surrounding region, officials said Monday.

It last erupted in 1963, killing almost 1,600 people and sending ash as far as the capital Jakarta.

Thousands of other evacuees are taking shelter in other camps in Badung, Bangli, Buleleng, Denpasar, Gianyar, Jembrana and Tabanan.

Indonesia has raised the alert level to the highest for the Gunung Agung volcano.

Dozens of intensifying tremors have seen almost 50,000 residents evacuated from the 12 kilometre danger zone.

Bali's global airport was operating normally on Monday, as were tourist spots across the island.

The national disaster agency said in its Tuesday statement (link in Indonesian) that 57,428 people had moved out of their homes and some had been received in "sister villages", which are neighbouring villages prepared to receive evacuees.

"It's obviously an bad thing".

Indonesia's national disaster agency has dispatched 640,000 face masks, 12,500 mattresses, 8,400 blankets, 50 tents, and has a budget of $75,000 for assistance.

He said not everyone had left the danger zone because they didn't want to leave livestock, were underestimating the risk or because of religious reasons.

Mount Agung, about 75 kilometres (47 miles) from the Indonesian tourist hub of Kuta, has been rumbling since August, threatening to erupt for the first time since 1963.

Mount Agung is one of more than 120 active volcanoes extending the length of Indonesia, which straddles the Pacific Ring of Fire.
