West Bromwich Albion's Jay Rodriguez: 'I should have had a penalty'

West Bromwich Albion's Jay Rodriguez: 'I should have had a penalty'”

West Bromwich Albion manager Tony Pulis accused Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez of "cheating" in the Premier League meeting between the two sides on Monday.

Given his side had a clear penalty turned down in the first period when Jay Rodriguez was taken out by Shkodran Mustafi, Pulis was not happy when speaking to Sky Sports and singled out Sanchez when discussing simulation, per Sky Sports.

On the two key moments, Pulis told Sky Sports: "I think everybody has seen what's happened today".

The West Brom boss said Rodriguez was "very honest" in not rolling around looking for the decision whilst blaming Sanchez for "diving".

"I think if you want to make an example of something, Sanchez actually dives on the edge of the box for the first free-kick".

Failing to hear a whistle, Rodriguez got straight to his feet and cannoned the post before Jake Livermore missed the rebound when it looked easier to score. "That's cheating. Then the tackle in the box on Jay, it is a stonewall penalty".

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger had a different view on the penalty to Pulis, suggesting referee Bobby Madley opted to play a bold advantage.

"Sanchez dived for the first free-kick (when Craig Dawson appeared to bring him down) - and that is cheating", Pulis said, as quoted by the Daily Mail. "They can make their own minds up and talk about it but i dint want to talk about it". Jay is very honest and does not get rewarded. "We haven't had a penalty at this football club for over this year and none of my players are told to roll around".

"The public out there, and everybody in the studio would have seen the referee's performance, so let them decide what they think. We're disappointed", he added. "We take those chances and are one or 2-0 up". However they only need a couple of successive wins to get the momentum back and Krychowiak is vital in that regard.
