Iran's Rohani Vows Stronger Missile Capabilities

Iran's Rohani Vows Stronger Missile Capabilities”

Friday's parade and missile display come days after Iran was called out in a speech by President Trump at the United Nations General Assembly, in which he called the nuclear deal with Iran "one of the worst and one-sided transactions" the US has ever conducted.

Iran said in its announcement Saturday that the Khorramshahr missile could carry several warheads.

"The missile has become smaller in size (compared to other Iranian ballistic missiles) and more tactical, and it will be operational in the near future", Hajizadeh said without further elaboration.

Though Iran has long boasted of having missiles in the same range in its arsenal, it was the first time that the Khoramshahr, with a range of 1,250 miles, had been displayed in public.

Simultaneously, a large-scale military parade was also held in the southern port city of Bandar Abbas, involving a range of naval watercraft, according to Tasnim news agency.

Addressing an armed forces parade in Tehran on September 22, marking the anniversary of the outbreak of the 1980-88 war with Iraq, Rohani pledged to build as many missiles as deemed necessary for deterrence and to reinforce other sections of Iran's armed forces.

"We will increase our military power as a deterrent".

He also said Tehran will keep supporting the "oppressed people of Yemen, Syria and Palestine" - a reference to Iran's role in the wars in Yemen and Syria and its support for Palestinian militant groups such as Hamas.

The news report cites that detail as being "much to the chagrin of President Trump and company" - but 2017 isn't the first time the USA has aired its concerns over Iran's rocket and missile research.

The U.S. President Donald Trump has criticized the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and major powers, and commented that Iran's continuing missile program has violated the spirit of the deal.

Trump put Iran "on notice" in February for test-firing a ballistic missile and imposed new economic sanctions in July over its missile programme and "malign activities" in the Middle East.
