Professors Decry Higher Ed Cuts In State Budget Bill

Professors Decry Higher Ed Cuts In State Budget Bill”

Joined by UConn President Susan Herbst, Malloy urged the faculty and 700 students to protest to GOP lawmakers, including their state Senator Heather Somers of Groton.

At this point it is highly unlikely that a compromise budget will be passed this week. The funding for the programs they need is tied up until a state budget is in place.

"If he does veto we have a second shot and that is to override the veto - and how do you do that?"

Len Fasano argues that it is inaccurate to say the pensions are not fully funded.

At a rally outside the legislative office building Tuesday, anxious parents, who said they have seen their sons or daughters regress in three months since graduation, pleaded with Malloy to adopt a budget that restarts the now-stalled day programming.

The Republican state budget, hard as it is to understand, hammers Connecticut's colleges and universities. Why? It was the first bi-partisan talks since the Democratically-controlled House and Senate passed a Republican budget.

Central Connecticut State University student Andrew Ianni says the Republican budget plan approved by the General Assembly is an atrocity. "We say it's time to revise and resubmit".

There's a meeting in Hartford that could move the state a small step closer to a budget deal. "We are doing our part to be responsible and accountable to the investments made by CT taxpayers, our students, and their families", Ojakian said in a statement on Wednesday.

Connecticut State University system professors today called on state lawmakers to preserve their funding, in the face of tens of millions of dollars in possible budget cuts.

"Small towns throughout Connecticut are facing tremendous uncertainty about how cuts in state aid may impact their communities", First Selectman of Litchfield and Connecticut Council of Small Towns President Leo Paul said in a statement on Wednesday.

The state's fiscal year ended on June 30 and the state still does not have a budget.

Paul added that municipalities are "facing deep cuts in education funding and other municipal aid programs under the Governor's Resource Allocation Plan". Doing so would mean cuts to teachers schools and increased property taxes.

Many legislators from both parties have said they only agreed to another tax hike on hospitals because it had earned the CHA's endorsement.

The Republican budget puts those savings into action for the 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 fiscal year.

"We could not agree more with the urgency of the situation", Mallow spokeswoman Meg Green said later Tuesday.

It remained unclear whether the legislature and the governor would adopt the hospital tax changes separately in the event a complete budget deal remains unresolved by mid-October.

"To be effective it should be done by Friday evening", the governor said. "The Democrats do not have support for their budget", Fasano said.

The CSU-AAUP echoed the same concern. They are trying to get that settled by Sunday.

Officials said the office has until Wednesday to show the National Association of Medical Examiners that it has addressed a short-term staffing problem or it would completely lose accreditation.
