PSA Group and Changan announce development of new pick-up

PSA Group and Changan announce development of new pick-up”

Having signed a framework agreement in June, the French Group and China's Changan have signed a co-development deal to implement this new type of vehicle that will be manufactured in Changan's Ding Zhou plant in China.

It is now unknown as to what the new one-ton pickup will be badged as.

Stranger still was news that Peugeot had only earmarked the one-tonner for South African introduction in 2021, leading us to assume that we'd in fact be getting a newer version of the bakkie.

The vehicle will initially be available in the Chinese market and will gradually be introduced to PSA's overseas markets, with Europe a likely destination.

PSA's announcement comes only a few months after revealing plans for a closer collaboration with ChangAn Automobile to bolster the DS luxury marque in China by launching one new model each year starting with 2018. It could make it onto the old continent considering Europeans are buying more and more one-ton pickup trucks, with deliveries increasing by 19 percent to 80,600 units in the first half of 2017. Recent examples would have to be Mercedes with the X-Class and Renault with the Alaskan, both of which are based on the Nissan Navara.

The project is the first result of a cooperation agreement signed between PSA and Changan in June in which PSA agreed to invest 500 million euros to help shore up its struggling Chinese operations.

PSA re-entered the pickup market in a limited way in September when it launched sales of the Peugeot-branded Pick Up in the African market built in Tunisia.

PSA does not yet have a one-ton pickup in the European market, which is led by Ford, Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubishi and Volkswagen.
