Twitter Says It Won't Suspend Trump Over Threatening Tweet Because It's 'Newsworthy'”

Trump's controversial tweet from Saturday, which contained a thinly veiled threat against North Korea, was deemed "newsworthy" and of "public interest", said the social media platform on Monday.

On Saturday, after North Korea's foreign minister called Trump a "mentally deranged man" at the United Nations General Assembly in response to the latter's threatening speech, the U.S. president responded on Twitter.

Twitter faced questions on Monday from users on its platform about why the company hadn't taken the tweet down and whether Trump's tweet violated the company's rules.

North Korea's Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho swiftly responded, claiming the threat against North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un ("Rocket Man") was a declaration of war. North Korea claimed it would begin taking self-defensive countermeasures, including shooting down USA military planes, even if they aren't flying over the country.

The company also said it is "committed to transparency and keeping people informed about what's happening in the world".

Twitter was pressed over the weekend on whether Trump's tweet was a violation of rules, but the company initially kept mum, telling BuzzFeed that it "does not comment on individual accounts for privacy and security reasons".

It acknowledged, however, that those guidelines were internal and that "we need to do better" on being transparent about its rules.

"This has always been internal policy and we'll soon update our public-facing rules to reflect this".

Many Twitter users, however, appeared unimpressed with Dorsey's promises and the company's explanation.

Twitter has been subject to continued criticism over how it handles tweets from the president that some consider offensive.
