U.S. wants diplomatic solution to North Korea problem, says James Mattis”

US Defence Secretary Jim Mitts on Tuesday said the United States wanted to settle the issue on nuclear crisis diplomatically with North Korea, toning down war of words between two countries.

Addressing a joint press conference with Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Mattis said he appreciated India's effort along with the global community to increase pressure against North Korea over "its unsafe and destabilising behaviour".

The letter comes as tensions between the US and North Korea continue to worsen because of Pyongyang's nuclear and missile development and its threats to have a weapon capable of reaching the continental United States.

The new executive order targeting third-country firms and individuals doing business with North Korea was signed by U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday.

Alarm over Pyongyang's nuclear and ballistic missile programmes dominated this year's gathering of world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly.

Yesterday, North Koreas Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho told reporters at the United Nations that the Trump administration has declared war against North Korea and it has "every right" under the UN Charter to take countermeasures, "including the right to shoot down the United States strategic bombers even if they are not yet inside the airspace border of our country".

Mattis previously said war with North Korea would be "catastrophic, but Lieu and Gallego said a number on potential casualties should be provided and asked for a response within 30 days".

"We continue to maintain the diplomatically-led effort in the United Nations".

On Monday, the North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho speaking to reporters in NY said Pyongyang has every right to take countermeasures against United States aggression, including shooting down warplanes, even if they are not in North Korean airspace.
