A referendum in Ireland to extend the conditions of access — ABORTION”

Result: thousands of Irish go every year in Great Britain or overseas to perform an abortion legally. But may be more for a long time.

Currently, abortion is allowed only if the continuation of the pregnancy threatens the woman a "real and substantial likelihood" that must be justified by two doctors.

Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said the vote will take place next May or June, with voters deciding if abortion should be made legal "in nearly all cases".

"The very minimum is that it's not confusing anymore and gives free, safe abortions to women in Ireland regardless of how they became pregnant".

Abortion is legal only in cases where the life of the mother is medically proven to be at risk. Politicians in a committee to examine the Eighth Amendment said they are anxious about meeting a December deadline for the referendum.

After the announcement, Zappone urged the government to act swiftly in setting up the referendum, according to the Irish Examiner.

It has been confirmed that Ireland will have a referendum on the eighth amendment in either May or June of next year.

Despite her role as an advocate for children, Zappone has been pushing for legalizing abortion in Ireland and thereby denying unborn babies a right to life.

The referendum was announced as part of a two-year timetable of votes on issues including Ireland's controversial blasphemy law.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar (pictured below) announced the vote on changing the Republic's Constitution would be held in May or June 2018, before the pope stages an worldwide event celebrating marriage and family life. "However we reserve judgement until we see the wording of the referendum". Pro-life campaigners have complained that the administration is showing poor timing since the referendum would fall just before the visit of the Pope, who is scheduled to attend the World Meeting of Families in Dublin in August 2018.

A predominately Catholic nation, Ireland has some of the most restrictive abortion laws in the world. The document showed the foundations' three-year plan through 2019 to target laws in Ireland, Mexico and other pro-life countries, the Catholic News Agency reported.

Polls indicate a strong majority of Irish voters oppose abortion on demand. However, the new law did not include cases of rape, inevitable miscarriage or women who can't afford to care for a child.
