Etihad Names British Military Official As New CEO”

DUBAI-Abu Dhabi's Etihad Aviation Group on Thursday named a new chief executive to navigate a strategic shift following hefty financial losses from investments in other airlines.

The Chairman of Etihad Aviation Group, His Excellency Mohamed Mubarak Fadhel Al Mazrouei, today confirmed the appointment of Tony Douglas as Group Chief Executive Officer, who will join the company in January 2018.

Tony Douglas will join Etihad, which lost $1.87 billion a year ago, in January from the British defence ministry where he oversees equipment procurement and training for the army.

In the United Kingdom, he held senior positions with airport operator BAA, and as Chief Operating Officer and Group Chief Executive designate of Laing O'Rourke. He formerly served as chief executive of Abu Dhabi Airports Company, a position he took up in 2013, and is also a former chief executive of Abu Dhabi Ports Company, the entity behind the development of Khalifa Port.

Ray Gammell had been serving as interim chief executive since May, and he will return to his position as group chief people and performance officer.

Currently Etihad Group's chief of support services Harsh Mohan is its nominee to the Jet Airways board.

Douglas will be tasked with positioning Etihad at the forefront of an increasingly competitive regional and global aviation market.

An Etihad Airways pilot passed away while operating a cargo flight from Abu Dhabi to Amsterdam, leading the carrier to divert its path and make an emergency landing in Kuwait.

"Etihad and its talented workforce have helped to reshape global and regional aviation".

Douglas will be supported by a leadership team which includes Ray Gammell, Ricky Thirion, Kevin Knight, Mana Mohamed Saeed Al Mulla, Henning zur Hausen, and Amina Taher.
