Giant rock falls, kills visitor at Yosemite National Park

Giant rock falls, kills visitor at Yosemite National Park”

At least 30 climbers were on the wall at the time, but it was not clear if the victims were climbers or tourists, ranger Scott Gediman said Wednesday.

A visitor to Yosemite National Park was killed Wednesday after being hit by a chunk of rock falling from El Capitan.

Park rangers were taking the injured person to a hospital while a helicopter hovered above to assess the situation. No names were immediately released.

Yosemite National Park said that the rockfall was near the Waterfall climbing route on the eastern face of the rock.

Visitors look up at the El Capitan monolith in the Yosemite National Park in California on June 4, 2015.

The Fresno Bee reports, "The rockfall was quickly noted on a climber's website, where one climber described a sheet of rock that gave way and posted a photo showing dust billowing".

Peter Zabrok, a witness to the incident, estimated that the rock was at least 100 feet wide and fell from 2,000 feet to 1,000 feet when it struck hikers at the base.

Officials did not identify the person who was killed or the person who was injured.

Longtime Yosemite climber Peter Zabrok (ZAY'-brok) says he's never seen anything like the chunk of rock that broke off. Zabrok said it was as big as an apartment building.

It was not clear whether the two victims were climbers or tourists at the site during the height of the climbing season.
