Lindsey Vonn Requests Permission to Ski vs”

"We're not looking for a rules change or anything, but we want to provide her this opportunity".

Lindsey Vonn's request to race against men in a World Cup downhill will be studied again by the International Ski Federation (FIS) next week.

FIS women's race director Atle Skaardal expressed further hesitation this summer, saying it would be a "very hard challenge" to organize.

Perhaps foreshadowing the talks ahead, the FIS said the following about the Vonn issue in its pre-meeting news release, "Certainly this is an anticipated topic that divides the FIS officials". "It's a hard topic". The entity will push to allow Vonn into the World Cup event at Lake Louise during the 2018-2019 season as, according to ESPN, this venue makes the most sense because both the women and men will compete in races at the same time there.

Kelly also said he was not sure if a decision would come right away from the meeting in Zurich, but that US Ski and Snowboard wanted to get the proposal on the agenda at a formal meeting.

Vonn, who turns 33 in October, said previous year that she'd like to "beat some boys and then call it a day" during her final season before retiring from competitive skiing. "The important points we're making in that is that she would indeed get a time and a result out of that, but it would not displace any of the men's World Cup points, because we don't want to have this one-time opportunity displace any of the points that the men would earn".

Vonn, who will turn 33 in October and is now training for the Pyeongchang Olympics after suffering a fractured humerus bone last November, has said she plans to retire after the 2018-19 season.

In a rare direct comparison of men's and women's World Cup downhills in March 2014, the final races of the season were run back-to-back on the same course setting at Lenzerheide, Switzerland. She's won 18 of her 41 starts there.
