Mark Zuckerberg responds to Trump, regrets he dismissed election concerns”

"Liberals say we helped Trump", Mr Zuckerberg wrote. Both sides are upset about ideas and content they don't like. "That's what running a platform for all ideas looks like", the Facebook CEO said in a post. But instead of ruminating on why people might feel that way, Zuckerberg came up with four different reasons as to why charges of bias and meddling were being blown out of proportion - and how the 2016 election was unlike anything else before.

Because of Facebook, users have discussed every aspect of the election and not just what the media covered.

He held firm that Facebook biggest role in the election was as a platform for candidates and citizens to communicate directly with one another regarding issues. He noted that "more people had a voice in this election than ever before" because of Facebook and notes that all the candidates had Facebook pages through which they interacted with tens of millions of followers.

"We ran "get out the vote" efforts that helped as many as 2 million people register to vote", Zuckerberg added.

A variety of German political experts and social media watchers had given the campaign largely a clean bill of health in terms of any wide-scale efforts to swing votes in the run-up to voting day. "We learned a lot, and will continue to apply those lessons in other forthcoming elections". "Collusion?" he said in a tweet.

His remarks were prompted by a tweet this morning in which President Donald Trump described Facebook as "always anti-Trump".

"Protecting the integrity of our platforms during elections is a huge focus for us and something we are committed to-particularly in the face of hostile and co-ordinated interventions", said Richard Allan, Facebook's vice president of public policy in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

Facebook has faced intense scrutiny over the possible effect it played during the campaign.

But in this post, he acknowledges that his earlier comment was dismissive, and then expressed regret over having said it. After almost a year of evidence to the contrary, Zuckerberg is still arguing the same point that earned him such heated criticism.
