Next Year's LCD iPhones Could Catch Up with OLED

Next Year's LCD iPhones Could Catch Up with OLED”

OLED displays make possible edge-to-edge phone designs, though the X also has an incredibly sophisticated facial recognition system that totally ruins said design.

The latest one rumor suggests that Apple could be considering advanced liquid crystal display (LCD) panels from Japan Display for its future iPhones. OLED panels have 1mm bezel, but Full Active LCD panels have slimmer bezels of 0.5mm. The company typically plans years in advance for future iPhone models, but doesn't commit to designs until around March the year a new phone launches, according to people familiar with the development process.

For anyone who's been following the OLED display saga, it's no surprise to hear that everyone in the display business has been committing billions of dollars in investments for the sole objective of securing iPhone business. Now, a report in the Wall Street Journal tells a different story. In a recent estimate by IHS Markit, Apple iPhone 8 Plus may be the company's "most expensive" smartphone when it comes to manufacturing them.

So while the iPhone X and whatever its successor is called relies on OLED, the iPhone 9 can potentially go near bezel-free while continuing to use an LCD panel.

The publication has reported that the Cupertino company has expressed interest in using Full Active LCD panel from Japan Display that was unveiled in June this year.

These aren't your regular LCD screens that you see in other iPhones, but rather Full Active-branded displays. Hence, it sports a full screen design like OLED-based smartphones such as Apple iPhone X and Samsung Galaxy Note 8. Now it may turn out the iPhone 9 (or whatever they end up calling next year's iPhone), could replace the iPhone X while retaining the curved edge-to-edge display, but revert back to LCD. Apple's iPhone could be one big reason for this confidence. But it's likely they won't all have OLED displays. Samsung now produces the OLED displays that will be used on the iPhone X. These panels are priced at $110 for each unit, about twice the price of an LCD screen.
