Arrest, searches in Audi emissions case

Arrest, searches in Audi emissions case”

Wolfgang Hatz, former head of engine development at the Volkswagen Group, has reportedly been arrested as part of investigations into the Dieselgate emissions cheating scandal.

Audi plans to roll out more than 20 electrified vehicles before 2025, with about a dozen created to be battery-only, development chief Peter Mertens said, mirroring the zero-emissions push by parent VW.

A lawyer representing Hatz declined to confirm the arrest and also declined any further comment.

Munich prosecutors earlier said they had arrested a second suspect and widened the number of suspects in their investigation.

Prosecutors in Munich who are conducting the investigation confirmed Thursday that the searches and arrest were carried out Wednesday.

German business daily Handelsblatt first reported the arrest and Sueddeutsche Zeitung disclosed Hatz's identity. According to a recent Automotive News report from the US, Audi has said it has no knowledge of the arrest but that it is continuing to cooperate with authorities. Earlier this year former Volkswagen Group engineer James Liang was sentenced to 40 months prison in the United States for his role in the emissions-dodging scandal, while former Volkswagen executive Oliver Schmidt will be sentenced in the United States on December 6.

Four months later the U.S. Justice Department said it had charged a former Audi manager with directing employees at the company to design software to cheat U.S. emissions tests in thousands of Audi diesel cars.

In July, U.S. authorities brought criminal charges against former Audi engineer Giovanni Pamio.
