'Big six' chase more Premier League profits

'Big six' chase more Premier League profits”

The Premier League's six wealthiest clubs - Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham - are facing significant opposition over a controversial proposal to revamp how overseas TV revenue is distributed throughout the division, according to reports. That worldwide bonanza added to the £5.1bn from the competition between Sky and BT for British football subscribers, plus other highlights deals, makes a total of £8.4bn in the current three-year cycle.

"I'm sure the top six would like that because they'll get a bigger slice of the pie but there are 14 other teams who want to be competitive", said Clement.

Swansea are understood to be among 11 teams to have opposed the move in talks with Premier League executive chairman Richard Scudamore this week.

Richard Scudamore, the Premier League's chairman, is understood to have presented a proposal to a meeting of the other 14 clubs held at the Pullman Hotel in London on Wednesday, for 35% of the next worldwide TV money to be distributed according to "merit" - where clubs finish in the league.

The league is keen to reach a compromise before going into domestic rights negotiations, where worries over what the "Big Six" could do next - if they are blocked - could create uncertainty.

West Ham, who Swansea visit on Saturday, Everton and Leicester are believed to be more open-minded about the proposal.

However, with the approval of 14 clubs needed to make such a change to the system (the first since 1992), Scudamore has his work cut out to broker agreement by next week.

Now the Premier League's popularity has made it prime content for pay-TV around the world, delivering approximately £3 billion (€3.4bn) to the 20 clubs in the 2016-19 round of deals.

Income from domestic television contracts is already distributed partly in accordance with league position.

The proposal would come into effect for the next overseas TV rights deal, which will run from 2019 to 2022 and is expected to be put out to tender later this year.
