Hackers gain access to some Whole Foods customers' credit card info

Hackers gain access to some Whole Foods customers' credit card info”

"Whole Foods Market recently received information regarding unauthorized access of payment card information used at certain venues such as taprooms and full table-service restaurants located within some stores", the statement said, explaining that those who shopped for groceries were likely not affected.

The upscale grocer, which Amazon recently purchased for US$13.7 billion (RM57.97 billion), said it uses a different point-of-sale system for its roughly 450 United States stores.

Amazon could not be immediately reached for comment.

Whole Foods said it's working with law enforcement and a cyber forensics company to further investigate.

Hackers targeted "point of sale systems" - or the machines where customers swipe or insert their cards - in order to steal the data, according to the press release.

Whole Foods reports some of its cash registers have been hacked.

The cybersecurity blog, KrebsOnSecurity, reported potential breaches at several Sonic restaurants via point of sale systems, with millions of credit and debit card numbers possibly being stolen.

Two other restaurants - Wendy's and Chipotle - suffered breaches earlier this year for similar reasons.

Not divulged were details of how many customers were affected, when the first instance took place, or when exactly the company became aware. Amazon officially acquired Whole Foods last month.

Wendy's said in July that point of sale systems at more than 1,000 of its USA restaurants were targeted by hackers, compromising an unknown number of credit and debit cards.
