Judge investigated for letting 'clever' Oxford student go free for stabbing boyfriend

Judge investigated for letting 'clever' Oxford student go free for stabbing boyfriend”

THE judge who said toff Oxford student Lavinia Woodward was "too brainy for jail" after she stabbed her boyfriend is being investigated by watchdogs.

Ian Pringle QC gave the medical student, 24, a suspended sentence for attacking her then partner in a coke and booze-fuelled frenzy.

Standing trial in May, Woodward pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding, after she punched and stabbed Thomas Fairclough whilst under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

Medical student Woodward had admitted the attack in December at her student accommodation at Christ Church College after drinking heavily.

On Thursday, the Judicial Conduct Investigations Office (JCIO) said it was investigating the judge's conduct after receiving a complaint.

A JCIO spokesman confirmed it "received a complaint against HHJ Ian Pringle QC" and that the findings would be published online.

The Telegraph's report added that the JCIO is now assessing whether the complaint received against Pringle QC matches its investigation criteria before taking action.

Sentencing her at Oxford Crown Court, Judge Pringle described her as a "highly intelligent individual" who was "genuinely remorseful" about the attack.

Enraged, she was said to have thrown a laptop at him before stabbing him with a knife, also injuring two of his fingers.

In a previous hearing, he said: 'To prevent this extraordinary, able young lady from following her long-held desire to enter the profession she wishes to would be too severe'.

Chairman of the ManKind Initiative Mark Brooks highlighted that had Woodward been a man she would undoubtedly been expected to go to serve a custodial sentence.

He said: 'When male victims see this case, to them it will actually enforce that view, that male victims are not taken as seriously as female victims'.
