Opposition Leader, Navalny Detained By Russian Police”

Alexei Navalny, the leader of Russia's opposition Progress Party and founder of the Anti-Corruption Foundation, posted on Twitter that police detained him in the entrance of his apartment block in Moscow to interview him at a police station.

Navalny said he was told by the country's election commission that he would not be allowed to run for president, but he insisted he would stand against Putin either way, Reuters reported.

Russian Federation is set to hold an election in March, with President Vladimir Putin expected to seek another term. The campaign has yet to officially open.

The authorities say opposition protests must be pre-approved by them, but Navalny has in the past said that the Russian constitution enshrines the right to freely hold such events.

State-run news agency TASS cited the Interior Ministry press service as saying that Navalny was detained by Moscow police for what it said were "repeated calls" for people to take part in unauthorized demonstrations.

He called on his supporters to show up at the rally in Nizhny Novgorod anyway.

Navalny has been gathering crowds of supporters across Russian Federation, seeking to shift public attitudes and battle political ennui in places such as the Pacific port of Vladivostok and other cities. "Now I am being detained for trying to take part in the SANCTIONED rally", Navalny tweeted.

Also writing on Twitter Navalny's campaign chief, Leonid Volkov said that he had been brought to a police station in Nizhny Novgorod ahead of the planned rally. Navalny had been previously detained and tried for such actions.
