Saints to kneel before, stand during anthem Sundayā€¯

Brees says that the team will kneel before the national anthem on Sunday, but stand for the playing of the song, as a team.

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees announced via Twitter that he and his teammates will kneel in unison prior to the playing of the national anthem Sunday at Wembley Stadium, and then will stand during the playing of the anthem.

The move puts the Saints in line with others who are choosing to recognize the protests against police brutality and racial inequality, while also honoring the anthem.

Gov. John Bel Edwards said he'd like the team to find another way to protest, and the Republican Party of St. Tammany Parish called on Saints owner Tom Benson to require players to stand during the anthem.

Trump has been locked in a feud with NFL players, owners and league officials over the symbolic protests.

Previously, only a handful of players had been taking a knee during the anthem but on Sunday, after Trump's comments, almost 200 chose to make their point including the Pittsburgh Steelers, who remained in the locker room except for one player.

Trump has not backed away from his remarks, and has continued to criticize the practice as disrespectful to the American flag and the country as a whole.
