Sisters Food Group Responds To Food Safety Allegations

Sisters Food Group Responds To Food Safety Allegations”

Butchery chain Crawshaws which entered into a supply chain agreement with 2 Sisters earlier this year is also investigating the allegations. Here's everything you need to know.

Food safety records at the largest supplier of chicken to United Kingdom supermarkets have been tampered with - meaning consumers could have been duped into buying out of date chicken, according to an investigation by The Guardian and ITV. Workers said use-by dates printed on the packets of the mixed chicken tended to reflect the age of the freshest, rather than oldest, meat in the batch.

Codes on crates of meat were also allegedly changed.

According to the report, an undercover journalist saw workers changing records of where the chickens had been slaughtered.

"Workers drop chickens on the floor of the processing plant and return them to the production line".

One worker told investigators: "I have (changed the slaughter dates) lots of times when I was working in that area".

It added: "However, we have not been given the time or the detailed evidence to conduct any thorough investigations to establish the facts, which makes a fulsome and detailed response very hard".

It said hygiene and safety remained at the "core" of its business, which was subject to frequent unannounced audits from the FSA and Red Tractor - the food industry's assurance scheme - among others.

"By example, our facility in the West Midlands under investigation received nine audits (five unannounced) in the months of July and August alone".

'However, we are never complacent and remain committed to continually improving our processes and procedures, ' the company said in a statement. If it comes to light any verifiable transgressions have been made at any of our sites, we will leave no stone unturned in investigating and remedying the situation immediately'.

Ranjit Singh Boparan owns 2 Sisters Food Group and is said to be worth £544million.

He lives in the West Midlands, where the company has its headquarters.

These allegations have sparked supermarkets to launching probes into the allegations facing 2 Sisters.

Birmingham-based 2 Sisters produces a third of all poultry products eaten in the UK.

Aldi, Lidl, Sainsbury's and Marks & Spencer all issued statements announcing the launch of independent investigations.

The company supplies Tesco, Sainsbury's, Aldi, Lidl and Marks & Spencer, which are all investigating the allegations.

"The standards shown in the footage are unacceptable, we take hygiene and traceability very seriously and have extremely high production standards", said a spokesman for the retailer. We are looking into these allegations with our supplier'.

"I think the Food Standards Agency will take this very seriously, they will inspect and look at the premises and see if there are grounds to close the facility down".

Tesco said it carried out its own regular audits of all its suppliers, adding that it took the allegations "extremely seriously" and would be carrying out a "rigorous investigation".
