Tree-trimming Company Hit With Record Fine for Hiring Undocumented Workers”

A Pennsylvania tree-trimming company was ordered to pay $95 million in the largest fine against a company for hiring immigrants who didn't have permission to work in the USA, according to federal officials.

USA prosecutors said the fine against Philadelphia-based Asplundh Tree Expert Co. was the largest criminal penalty ever imposed in an immigration case.

The $95 million figure is the largest settlement ever in an immigration case, the KYW report said. Some of the immigrants were in the US illegally, none had authorization to work in the.

"This decentralized model tacitly perpetuated fraudulent hiring practices that, in turn, maximized productivity and profit", it said.

Investigators with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement began auditing Asplundh in 2009 and found that it employed unauthorized workers.

Prosecutors said company managers deliberately looked the other way while supervisors knowingly hired thousands of undocumented workers between 2010 and 2014.

The company's chairman and CEO Scott Asplundh said in a statement that it has taken steps to improve its hiring practices, including reviewing the identification of all employees.
