United Kingdom minister urges Aung San Suu Kyi to act over Rohingya

United Kingdom minister urges Aung San Suu Kyi to act over Rohingya”

The U.N. secretary-general told Burma to halt the military operations that have sent over 500,000 Rohingya Muslims fleeing to Bangladesh, as worldwide pressure mounts on Aung San Su Kyi and the country's military.

Progress in the country risked being "derailed" by the "tragedy", he said.

"We call on Aung San Suu Kyi to meet the Rohingya personally", the officials said in a statement.

Field is the first foreign minister to visit the western Myanmar state since the crisis there escalated with nearly half a million of Rohingyas fleeing to Bangladesh, the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office said in a statement.

Suu Kyi has little if any control over the security forces under a military-drafted constitution that also bars her from the presidency and gives the military veto power over political reform. "We need the violence to stop and all those who have fled to be able to return to their homes quickly and safely".

Mark Field called on the country's de facto leader to grant full humanitarian access to the United Nations and ramp up efforts to protect the under siege group.

The appeal came as a British minister urged Ms Suu Kyi to help end the violence, which has driven at least 480,000 people over the border into neighbouring Bangladesh.

"The Rohingya have suffered for too long", he told activists at his party's conference.

The 1.1 million Rohingya in Buddhist majority Myanmar are denied citizenship and classified as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, despite claiming roots in the region that go back centuries, with communities marginalized and occasionally subjected to communal violence.
